I have a noise coming from the rear of the car when the tires hit a bump. I bought the car new in May. I thought it might be the spare tire so I took it out. The noise continued so I thought it might be the bolt that holds the spare tire so I tightened it. I am still getting the noise. I have had the wheels off and been underneath looking for something loose, but cannot find anything. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, Just got car back tonight. Like you I thought noice was in spare tire well, etc. Turns out after five days in shop it was sway-bar link. They replace a bushing and a TSB - spring insulators. Noise was like a knock and bump at low speed.:headbang:

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot!
I have been messing with this for a month. I put it on this forum and in about 30 miinutes I get help.

You may have a solution already -- but we've had the same problem with our 2010 LaCrosse CSX for a little over a month. I finally took it in for service, and the work order says:

Cause: "Rear Shock Bumpers fallen out of position. Mis-formed."
Correction: "Road tested noted noise. Inspected rear suspension. Noted both rear shock bumpers / boots out of position. Parts on order U.S.A."

They'll call next week when the parts are in.

Thank you
I have been busy. I am planning on taking the car in next week. I will take a print out of this forum into the dealer and see what they come up with.

Thank you Waynef and Agilson. I got the car back today. They fixed the rear sway bar connections and the car is now back to being a very quiet car. Such a pleasure.

That was timing, as we just received our car back today. The car went back in and the dealer had it for 9 days as the last fix didn't correct the issue. I do have to commend the dealer as they were extremely thorough, kept in touch, and wouldn't return the car until it was fixed. I wasn't happy when the car came back the first time as the problem wasn't fixed, but they sure stepped up the second time.

Work order is now marked, "REPLACE REAR SWAY BAR BUSHINGS, NOISEY. R.R. SHOCK U.S.A. PART CAME DAMAGED. CONTINUED DIAG WITH CHASIS EARS. NOTED NOISE FROM SWAY BAR BUSHINGS. REPLACED BUSHINGS, AND ROAD TESTED WITH SHOPFOREMAN NOTED ERATIC TICK NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE. CONTINUED DIAG INSTALLED SHIM TO GAS TANK STRAPS. RE-TESTED NOTED NOISE STILL PRESENT. INSPECTED TORQUE ON REAR SWAY BAR LINK MOUNTING BOLTS. NOTED IMPROPER TORQUE. LOOSENED AND RE-TORQUED, RE-ROAD TEST WITH SHOPFOREMAN AND NOTED NOISE TO BE GONE."

Fingers crossed! Hope this helps someone else as well.

I have noticed what seems to be the same sound coming from the rear of my car.
I took it into the dealer, but they could not reproduce the sound or find anything wrong.
With the info provided here I will be taking it back in to have them take a closer look at the items mentioned in this post.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks

I had that same noise a week after I took delivery and it was the rear shocks. They were replaced and all is fine.

Where are Quality inspectors on the car before it is shipped noise in trunk, seat
problems, this has happend since 2010 and there are TSB on these problems why they do not fix it before the car is shipped???????????????????????

I have an '06 LaCrosse. We had noise coming from the rear of the car for quite a while...sometimes a bump, sometimes even a 'grinding' sound. It seemed to change with the outside temperature, and would lessen when the car would get driven a lot. However - it would *always* happen when exercising the full movement of the rear suspension.

I thoroughly inspected the rear suspension multiple times and didn't ever find anything out of the ordinary.

I am rebuilding a '78 Corvette and switched to all polyurethane bushings. These have a tendency to squeak if they aren't properly lubricated before installation. This got me thinking about the LaCrosse. I jacked up the back of the car again, popped off the rear sway bar frame brackets, and lubricated the bore of the rear sway bar bushings with some white lithium grease.

14 months later - still no noise.

Hope that helps,

Brian

Over the last few weeks the LaCrosse has started to develop a small clunking sound in it's right rear when going up over small grade changes. This happens when entering some parking lots which have slight curb lips and when the tire falls down into a manhole cover recess and then hops back up to the road surface.

I've been waiting to have the oil changed before my cross country trip and finally took it in yesterday. Before turning over the car I made the clunk happen a couple times by doing some laps around the dealership parking lot which has the same type of entrance as my local 7-11 where the noise first became evident. I then took the car into the drop off area, described the noise to my service guy, and told him where he could reproduce it on their property. I mentioned that others have reported bad rear shocks or loose sway bar links. As always he took copious notes.

After a short time they had changed the oil ($14 to use my provided M1 EP oil & filter) and told me the following... INSTALLED CHASSIS EARS AND FOUND THE NOISE TO BE COMING FROM THE RIGHT REAR SHOCK. TEST DROVE WITH TECHNICIAN AND HE AGREED. SHOCK IS SOP.

He's ordered a new shock and will double check the sway bars links after they install it. He thinks the repair could take a couple hours so they will have a loaner car ready if I would prefer not to wait.

Time after time Joyce Koons Buick GMC impresses me with their eagerness to fix problems. I encourage anyone in the Northern Virginia area to consider stopping in and asking for Service Advisor Ryan Reynolds. He's a class act and is batting 1000 after several issues.

Clunk was easily produced here and here. FWIW... as wonderful as my wife is, I think if the rear wheels fell off her car she probably wouldn't notice. Take your spouse's car for the occasionally spin 😀

I've had a rough couple days with bouts of dizziness when moving around in bed. My doc says I'm describing a classic case of benign positional vertigo- that's a bummer. Anyway, I'm feeling better and the spins have stopped so this morning I went in to have that rear shock replaced, here's how that's going...

I got to the dealership at 6:45a and my service guy told me it should take < 2 hours to have the shock replaced. Rather than deal with a loaner car I figured that 2 hours would be an easy wait. I did my normal McDonald's routine but come 11a the car was still MIA. Service guy was good about checking on me occasionally. He told me that they had replaced the shock but on test drive were still able to hear some noise. They had called GM tech support who wanted them to take more stuff apart and that they didn't really know what the problem was at this point. The dealership is fresh out of GM loaners but he had a Honda Accord I could take home if I wanted to get out of there (they also sell Hondas). So many broken GM's that you're out of loaners? That's not super encouraging.

Understandably they're closed for the 4th so until at least Thursday or Friday I've got this go-cart 4 cyl base Accord. Weak engine, bumpy suspension, grabby brakes. Service guy says he'll call before end of business today with an update which is nice. I guess you win some, you lose some. I hope they'll be able to get the LaCrosse road worthy as my 5000 mile trip (through burning Colorado, where we have lots of family) is only 2 weeks away now. Fingers crossed!

***** Update

I've been home now for about an hour and the service guy just called. Turns out the tech found a cracked retaining clip on one of the sway bar links that was making a clicking sound. The part is on it's way and they should be finished by 3pm this afternoon. That's a nice surprise and now I know that I really don't want to own another Accord. Back in 1998 I bought the 1st 2 door Accord V6 when it came out (the leather EX). I liked that car but today's loaner is particularly unimpressive. Eh, Honda Schmonda 🙂

***** Update 2

As promised car finished and back at home. Nice job, Koons of Manassas!

I have a 2012 lacrosse and it made a rattle when hitting a small bump on the drivers side. Took off the rear tire and found the shock absorber had a plastic cylinder with a hard rubber base around the shocks piston rod (that I assume was a dust cover for the rod). The "plastic cylinder and rubber base had become disconnected from the shock and were freely bouncing around. Cut them of and remove them and noise is gone. Shock may get dirty, but is works.
