1989 lesabre dashboard vinyl does not fit anymore

I have a 1989 buick lesabre custom. The vinyl dashboard pad has shrunk and will not fit properly onto the dashboard itself. I am trying to find out the best way repair this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1989 lesabre dashboard vinyl does not fit anymore

There is no real way to fix this. You can recover the dashboard using some new material and adhesive, and a heat gun to heat up the vinyl material such that it will stretch in the appropriate places. Check online for instructions on how to do this or talk to your local auto upholstery or customizing shops.

The simplest fix is to look for a dash out of a vehicle that has spent its life garaged or in a cooler northern climate, and simply swap it out. You can use any dash up through 1990 when they redesigned to the "slug" body style.

It is not economical to keep a car of that vintage in pristine condition unless it has a really high resale value (eg Grand National). I recently gave up on my 1988 Buick Electra (still ran great but paint shot, headliner sagging, A/C dead, power windows slow, axle boot split, radio dead, etc) and replaced it with a 2001 Lesabre that has none of the problems of the former car, for a little over $2K (2001 was an airbag total that I fixed myself, now from the driver's seat one would never know that, still have a small cut in the bumper cover and tweaked hood edge that I'm living with).

I have talked with my local auto upholstery shop, but he said he does not ave the equipment to repair vinyl. I am still searching for a dash from another car. Thanks for the advice.

I was talking about complete recovering your existing dash with new material (auto customizing shops do this all the time), and the guy at the shop you talked to was talking about repairing the existing vinyl skin on yours, two completely different things.

Still, easiest to find another dash, even if it's not the corrrect color. You can buy rattle cans of vinyl paint which produce excellent results, so long as you completely degrease the surface (no armorall or that type of product left) prior to painting. You can buy vinyl spray paint at most auto body supply stores.

Ok, I will have to try that. Now the hard part will be finding a dash that is not damaged. Thanks for all your advice.
