hey guys. i need some help getting to the bottom of my elc problem. the problem being, it simply doesn't work.

heres the story. in about march of '10 i was driving thru a friends yard because i was helping him work on his mower. we went and bought a new engine for it, and he said just drive back to the shed. so he told me where to go and i went. well the next thing i know my car is scraping on seemingly nothing. i look under the car, no fuel lines cut all seems ok apart from the missing undercoat, we let bygones be bygones and we went on with the mower. (it ended up being a metal property marker)

when i got back in the car to leave, before i even started the car i heard click click click click, faster than a turn signal with a broken bulb under the back seat. i start the car, it stops. turn off the car it starts. and no compressor ever. it did this for about 3 months and then just stopped of its own accord. but still no compressor.

here is a video i took of it while it was still doing it.

so while i was having my exhaust done last month, i got under the lift wiith a spray can and was painting up that bare metal where the marker scraped off the undercoat. i get back under the wheel, and i notice about 3 severed wires. mechanic was cool, gave me some solderless but connectors and a crimping tool to use and i put em back together and was on my way. still no compressor. so while i was at the junkyard getting window regulators, i got the relay that was clicking before out of the junkyard car thinking mine had just burned itself out. still no fix.

i checked the 30a fuse, and its good and i also checked the holes where the relay plug in, and 2 on one side are live and the other 2 are dead. didnt think to run wires up the relay with it plugged in but i doubt both are bad.

my question to you guys is, where do i go from here? im at a loss. thanks alot!

The way I fixed mine was to use the Factory Service Manual(FSM), and a multi meter. There is a trouble tree for "Back of car low". You go through it step by step, and it will isolate the bad component, or circuit. It is time consuming, and at times, frustrating, but it will give you an appreciation for what mechanics go through to diagnose these problems. There is no other way to go about it. You need a diagnostic procedure. My problem was one broken wire between the level sensor, and the relay. I really don't think anyone will be able to help you otherwise. It can be so many things. If you like the car, and intend to keep, and work on it yourself, you need an FSM. You can get great deals on them on EBay.

I know I am new to this forum, but i used to work in service department at buick dealership. I also know the guy who asked for help because his compressor wasn't turning on has fixed it--since the post is 6 yr old---BUT to anyone who might read this----DO NOT USE BUTT or TEE connectors.

They are not 100%- and have a tendency to make poor connections or none at all- and break wires.

I hate those things. I know they are handy for trailer wires or some kinds of circuits, but anything critical like replacing an important component I wouldn't use. Thats me.

Good luck.
